SINTESI
Il paradigma meritocratico, largamente dominante nella cultura occidentale altamente competitiva, è radicato nella convinzione che il successo sia dovuto principalmente, se non esclusivamente, a qualità personali come talento, intelligenza, abilità, sforzi o assunzione di rischi. A volte, siamo disposti ad ammettere che un certo grado di fortuna potrebbe anche svolgere un ruolo nel raggiungimento di un significativo livello di successo. Ma, in realtà, è piuttosto comune sottovalutare l'importanza di forze esterne nelle singole storie di successo. È risaputo che l'intelligenza o il talento sono distribuiti tra la popolazione secondo la classica curva a campana (cioè la distribuzione “normale”, o con una certa media e varianza), mentre la distribuzione della ricchezza - considerata come un proxy del successo - segue in genere una legge di potenza (legge di Pareto), con moltissimi poveri e sempre meno persone sempre più ricche. Tale discrepanza tra la distribuzione “normale” degli input, dotata di una scala tipica, e la distribuzione priva di scala (scale free) degli output, suggerisce che un ingrediente nascosto possa essere all'opera dietro le quinte. In questo articolo, con l'aiuto di un semplice ed intuitivo modello ad agenti, suggeriamo che tale ingrediente è nient’altro che... il caso. In particolare, dimostriamo che, se è vero che un certo grado di talento è necessario per avere successo nella vita, quasi mai le persone più talentuose raggiungono i picchi più alti di successo, essendo quasi sempre superate da individui mediocri ma sensibilmente più fortunati. Per quanto ne sappiamo, questo risultato controintuitivo - sebbene implicitamente suggerito tra le righe da una vasta letteratura scientifica - è qui da noi quantificato per la prima volta. Esso getta nuova luce sull'efficacia della valutazione del merito sulla base del livello di successo raggiunto in passato e sottolinea i rischi di distribuire onori o risorse eccessivi a persone che, alla fin fine, potrebbero essere semplicemente più fortunate di altre.
